Engineers, like the construction workers in that movie, have an interactive job. You have to work with others whether theyre on the same team, the same project, or they just share the same workspace. As in any interaction, tempers can sometimes flare on the job and a fight or flight response arise. And the next thing you know youre smack dab into conflict, says Nina Godiwalla, director of diversity and inclusion at international law firm Norton Rose Fulbright. She was formerly chief executive officer of the executive training company MindWorks Leadership. Shes also the author of Suits A Woman on Wall Street (Atlas, 2011), which looks at the subtle ways Wall Street holds ba ck women.Conflicts arise when smart people have different opinions and strong emotions, she says.This is certainly true in the engineering space, where engineers have to deal with clients and bosses who may make what seem like unreasonable or impossible design demands, with team members who may have a different idea for a design, or with personnel from other parts of the business, like marketing, who have their own requirements for a project that may differ entirely from engineering goals.For You 7 Ways to Move up the Engineering Ladder The marketing or sales department may be pushing you to get them a magazine-worthy rendering of a new product before the thing is even fully designed. Theyre tasked with creating content around that product and the sales department wants to start selling it.But as an engineer, your goal is to ensure the product will function as required.In response to conflict, some people become peacekeepersthey cede to those theyre in conflict withor they try to ge t others to see it their way and perform as they request. On the other hand, they might step back from the situation with the behuf to continue on with the job after the conflict is resolved.People become disengaged because theyre avoiding or defusing the conflict, Godiwalla says.Godiwalla offers a way to deal with on-the-job conflicts that may temper the fight-or-flight response. When you feel attacked, she says, respond with an observation or a question. This disarms the other person and calms the conflict.Lets say a marketing person calls to ask when she can expect that rendering. We have a deadline too, you know, she says. Heres what Godiwalla recommends you do.Take a moment to identify your feelings and thoughts. By shifting your attention there, you focus not on the person or their message, but on your reaction. Then, shift your attention away from the physical sensation youre experiencing, like sweaty palms, a racing heartbeat, or a surge of adrenaline. That may prevent you f rom mounting an immediate and angry counterattack.It also gives you time to think of an observation or a thoughtful question, she says. Rather than barking out,Im aware of your deadline,You can say,I really believe in the engineering and the marketing process and want both to be the best they can be.Or, you might ask,How can the engineers best help you as we finish testing the product?Either response may cause the other person to take a step back and allow both of you to take the conversation in a direction that allows for both points of view. Ultimately, it could help all parties come up with an acceptable compromise.One thing is certain Difficult, anger-inducing situations will never disappear from the job of an engineer, even those who strive to do their work and maintain the peace.I cant make difficult situations disappear, but you can change the situation, Godiwalla says. After all, the best way to remain professional is to stay cool, calm, and collected- right? A recent article by Jeff Haden of Inc. reports that some of the worldâs most successful leaders- think the Steve Jobsâ and Jeff Bezosâ of the world- regularly express all manner of emotions, including anger. The difference between them and your co-worker who throws an adult tempter tantrum every time things donât go his or her way? They know how to stay in control of their anger and harness it for its benefits (extra focus and a boost of adrenaline-driven confidence) rather than make a fool of themselves. So what does this look like in action? Inc. suggests two great ways to keep your anger in check and productive. First, try handling these emotions as they come, rather than letting them bottle up until you explode with embarrassing rage: When you feel irritated, donât swallow those feelings. Think about how you feel. Think about why you feel the way you feel. Then work with how you feel. Say what you need to say, letting a little of your irritation show through. You wonât have to worry about losing your cool because, after all, you arenât angry- youâre just irritated. Second, try channeling your anger towards an action, rather than a person. If an employee makes a mistake, yelling at him is counterproductive (and makes you look like a terrible boss). By focusing on the situation that youâre angry about, rather than the person, you can use your anger in a more productive way: Saying, âYou do a great job, but Iâm really struggling to understand why you did that. Can we talk about it?â Directing your frustration at the action and not the employee helps reduce his or her feelings of defensiveness while still allowing you to express your frustration- which will help you both focus on solving the problem. In an analysis of more than 330,000 U.S. employee and candidate survey data, new research from analytics platform Visier found that Silicon Valley appears to be ageist in its hiring practices.For Silicon Valley, the hiring spree to fill the jobs of the future ends when you reach a certain age. âThe tech industry is hiring a disproportionately higher ratio of workers than non-tech up until the age of 48- indicating bias does exist that favors younger candidates,â the report states. Even accounting for differences in the labor force, the researchers found that millennials were being hired at much higher rates than people ages 34 to 48, while Generation X-ers in tech were being hired 33% less than their existing workforce representation.With older workers being more likely to be passed over than their younger counterparts, it makes sense then that the average tech worker is full of youthful glow. Visier found that the average tech worker is 38 years old, a number thatâs five years younger than the average workers in other industries.Ageist practices were mainly in hiring, however. Although older tech workers may face discrimination in getting the job, Visier found that once theyâre there, their salaries and tenure, at least, donât suffer. Visier found that older tech workers had comparable salaries and retirement rates to non-tech workers. And even though promotion rates for tech workers decreased with their age, that finding was consistent across the board for all the industries.How older workers and employers can stop ageismAmong the most interesting recommendations Visier had for fixing the worker age gap? Donât screen out job candidates based on their length of unemployment.Research has found that unemployment begets more unemployment. One depressing study found that regardless of age, gender, race, or industry, if youâve been unemplo yed for longer than six months, your chances of getting a job go down significantly.And older workers who are already getting discriminated against for their age get trapped in a cycle where their age makes them undesirable to hiring managers, and the unemployment that their age is causing also makes them undesirable to managers.Age discrimination is against the lawOf course, ageist hiring practices in the United States are not just unfair, theyâre illegal. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act makes it illegal to discriminate older workers and job seekers over age 40. Some older tech workers are taking advantage of their legal protections, and are taking tech companies to court. Between 2008 and 2015, Silicon Valleyâs 150 biggest companies faced 226 complaints of age discrimination filed with the California Department of Fair Employment, according to Bloomberg.Facebook, a company whose CEO once said that âyoung people are just smarter,â is especially feeling the heat thi s month with two age discrimination lawsuits. One former Facebook employee Gary Glouner, 52, filed a recent suit alleging that he was fired in 2015 over his age and disability, and for the crime of ânot moving fast enoughâ in Facebookâs work culture.And a Facebook job seeker, 61-year-old Stephen Cohen, said that when he sent over his resume, which listed his graduation date as 1978, he was told that the position had suddenly been filled. Cohenâs now suing Facebook in federal court.To keep working, older tech workers will have to keep jumping over these legal, demoralizing hurdles - all for the chance of being given the same job opportunities as everyone else.
